Sittin there clackin smackin with her sticks Every day on the stairs from bout 4 to 6 And she’s learning the licks And she’s pickin up quick If she sticks with it, this kid is up in the mix. You gonna trip when you start, But you gotta have heart. To be a better shredder You gotta get out and get 'er every day. Every wave, every face, ever chance, gotta take. Make mistakes, play hard, when you find the break So after supper kids Pull out the Tupperware lids Plastic straps smack that, a couple of hits Oil drums tin cans Sticks or bare hands And Soon you’ll be the girl at the front of the band. SO… Keep on working hard girl you know its gonna pay You gonna get your spot in the line someday Paddle hard, live large, battle for every wave. Cuz Girl this world is yours and its time to play Keep on working hard girl, Your gonna get your spot in the line some day Paddle hard, live large, This world is yours, yeah You know I got my task handed Crash landed, ace planted ate sand and got stranded. in the white water, Then I paddle out again like a pig to the slaughter But by the end of the day,I found my wave and I caught her CUZ The secret to success is simply persistence Resistance to give in, cuz you gonna get this. Be the first one out, and the last one in, You’ll be the worst at first but then you try again. Best avoid the crowd, best to laugh out loud, And best to Tuck and roll when yr board gets plowed. Cuz, you gonna rave when you catch that first wave. and You gonna pop when you make your first drop And first time, you ride the line, pull out the champagne wine cuz girlfriend you ain’t never gonna stop….. Keep on working hard girl you know its gonna pay You gonna get your spot in the line someday Paddle hard, live large, battle for every wave. Cuz Girl this world is yours and its time to play Keep on working hard girl, Your gonna get your spot in the line some day Paddle hard, live large, This world is yours, yeah Pelourinho cobblestone No we’ don’t wanna go home Samba reggae on the daily getting up in my dome I'm eatin acaraje in Itacare With Iyamanje on the coast of Dende Salvador da Bahia, Love ya first time I see ya so play that Axé out the back of the Fiat Jardim da Allah, Farol da Barra I took the bus there stuck the fare in my bra I’m a big brown burly girl Not very girly girl Not Roxy or Rip Curl or Hurly Girl I’m the one who dove and found the black pearl, I’m the one who chose to take back the world. I’m a surf ninja warrior Fast – fighting furious Salt water jedi, red eyed and glorious Write my own story until I’m notorious Lead you through the mines of Moria, victorious Keep on working hard girl you know its gonna pay You gonna get your spot in the line someday Paddle hard, live large, battle for every wave. Cuz Girl this world is yours and its time to play Keep on working hard girl, Your gonna get your spot in the line some day Paddle hard, live large, This world is yours, yeah Keep on working hard girl you know its gonna pay You gonna get your spot in the line someday Your beat is gonna pop when its time to play Cuz Girl this world is yours , now its bombs away

Well the kids on the street run down like a storm Like a swarm to the beach and they each got a board And they strap on a leash when they reach, you’ll be floored By they way that they ride, sing praise to the lord. Rocinha is hoppin, jumping, surfing Samba on Thursday get your body working Slidin skatin got you booty shakin Make you first world kids quit your belly achin. Chorus So put your hands up, if you love to ride Put your hands up, if you follow the tide. If you paddle for the outside giant set, If you are looking for the best one yet. If you got sand in your hair and sand on your feet Sand in your underwear and sand in your sheets If you dream of waves from the night before And you wake at first light cuz you'd like some more. Skinny little lanes and skinny little houses Skinny little kids but they don’t think about it When they catchin waves on overhead days And surfin don’t pay but the beach is still crowded Bocao’s got a room full of surfboards the worst boards That you ever seen but soon they’ll be worth more Put a little sheen, and soon they'll be worth more Open the ocean to business, what you work for. Chorus Put your hands up si você gosta de surfar Put your hands up, todos os caminos do mar Put your hands up esse e geral da Rocinha, A galera unida, surfe e nossa vida Chorus in English

We’re Attached to our boards Like umbilical cords Charging waves like mongol hordes, like matadors, like Young lords you better draw your swords. Cuz on Sundays with fun waves, we run straight to corners with surf boards and thumbs raised. We done crazy! I like my days wavey, like my waves with gravy, You might try to save me, I aint gonna trade see, not even maybe, I'm a surf baby! Ela era assím, subia descia sorria pra mim queria podia coria caia ia até o fim coria caia ia até o fim menina folia alegria jasmim surf skate dance patins o mar e as ondase as flores e o canto o verso e o pranto a ventania nos cantos e amor e os anjos City nights, city lights, got my heart tight Mind's like give me five and I can get right. Between carlights and barlights there's starlight. Get on board our boards, and we can take flight Kick flip, drop dip, stick it, oh that felt nice. Surf streets under streetlights and keep the curves tight. We know something and they don't understand it Feeling that I get when I kick flip and land it On the board, oh lord, the first time I stand up, Make my first drop and my universe expanded. Ela era assím, subia descia sorria pra mim queria podia coria caia ia até o fim coria caia ia até o fim a sintonia naturaleza o movimento da beleza forca e delicadeza coragem e destreza ela era assím I push over the ledge, now I’m over the edge. Its life as I know it, I better not blow it, the wave shows its face to me, puts me in my place, but it’s Ok, cuz it's the place to be. On the shining blue sea, where the river runs free, and you and me are free to be you and me. I gotta hop to it, pop, make the drop into it, don't stop, just do it, don't think, intuit, like kids do it, let your legs carry you through it. Before you know it you'll be flying down fluid, And forgetting your life as you knew it. Ela era assim, subia descia sorria pra mim queria podia coria caia ia ate o fim coria caia ia ate o fim

about

I am a rapper, surfer, and environmental educator. A couple years ago, I received a very special award from the outdoor school where I worked that allowed me to go on my dream adventure.

So in July of 2012 I set off for a solo girl surf safari up the coast of Brazil. I had many goals – to become a better surfer, to immerse myself in Brazilian culture, to meet other female surfers and musicians, and to document my adventures through a blog and original hip hop videos to inspire other women and girls.

I did all these things, and the journey changed my life. The music and videos here are the immediate products of my trip. But since returning from Brazil, I've been continuing the Surfer Grrrl adventure every day! I am now co-running the organization Brown Girl Surf, and working to create a more diverse alternative surf community in the Bay Area and shifting the media around women’s surfing.

I created the music and video of the Surfer Grrrls project, to celebrate the beauty and fun of communing with the ocean on a surf board, to inspire women and girls to boldly invent their own ways of being in the world, and to raise the profile of women of color in the ocean.

You can get the full story of my journey on my blog at www.surfergrrrls.com.
