about

This track is inspired by the girl drummers and surfers of Bahia, in Brazil. It is the final product of my project, Surfer Grrrls Brazil, during which I travelled up the coast of Brazil, meeting other girl surfers and musicians, surfing my heart out, and creating original raps to celebrate my adventures and inspire other girls and women to live their own. (check out www.surfergrrrls.com) I made three music videos, one from the south of Brazil, one from Rio, and this one from Bahia.

The inspiration for this song came from the amazing young girl drummers I encountered in Bahia. In Candeal, the infinitely musical neighborhood where I stayed in Bahia, there was a little girl who sat on her front stairs every day, practicing beats on a tupperware container. The stairwells and playgrounds were filled with children making music with whatever they could find.

The drum beat sampled in the instrumental track was recorded live in Salvador, Bahia, from a rehearsal of the Didá youth orchestra on the streets of the Pelhourinho. Most of the members of this group are young girls.

The video features the Didá youth orchestra, as well as my next door neighbor. The surfers featured here (besides me!) include Érica Prado, and other inspirational women I met in Bahia and elsewhere in Brazil.
Much of my footage from Bahia was lost when my harddrive crashed on the plane ride home. While my other Surfer Grrrls videos were all shot on location, this one includes some footage from Ocean Beach in San Francisco, and features Jenny O'Connell and Jazz Vassar. Jazz and I met in Salvador and spent 36 adventuresome hours together during which we became tight friends. It seemed appropriate that after some beautiful footage of Jazz and I going surfing on the beaches of Salvador was lost in the harddrive crash, that Jazz bring her energy back to the video through her capoeira-inspired dancing on our own California home beach.

lyrics

Sittin there clackin smackin with her sticks
Every day on the stairs from bout 4 to 6
And she’s learning the licks
And she’s pickin up quick
If she sticks with it, this kid is up in the mix.

You gonna trip when you start,
But you gotta have heart.
To be a better shredder
You gotta get out and get 'er every day.
Every wave, every face, ever chance, gotta take.
Make mistakes, play hard, when you find the break

So after supper kids
Pull out the Tupperware lids
Plastic straps smack that, a couple of hits
Oil drums tin cans
Sticks or bare hands
And Soon you’ll be the girl at the front of the band.

SO… Keep on working hard girl you know its gonna pay
You gonna get your spot in the line someday
Paddle hard, live large, battle for every wave.
Cuz Girl this world is yours and its time to play

Keep on working hard girl,
Your gonna get your spot in the line some day
Paddle hard, live large,
This world is yours, yeah

You know I got my task handed
Crash landed, ace planted
ate sand and got stranded. in the white water,
Then I paddle out again like a pig to the slaughter
But by the end of the day,I found my wave and I caught her

CUZ The secret to success is simply persistence
Resistance to give in, cuz you gonna get this.

Be the first one out, and the last one in,
You’ll be the worst at first but then you try again.
Best avoid the crowd, best to laugh out loud,
And best to Tuck and roll when yr board gets plowed.

Cuz, you gonna rave when you catch that first wave. and
You gonna pop when you make your first drop
And first time, you ride the line, pull out the champagne wine cuz girlfriend you ain’t never gonna stop…..

Keep on working hard girl you know its gonna pay
You gonna get your spot in the line someday
Paddle hard, live large, battle for every wave.
Cuz Girl this world is yours and its time to play

Keep on working hard girl,
Your gonna get your spot in the line some day
Paddle hard, live large,
This world is yours, yeah

Pelourinho cobblestone
No we’ don’t wanna go home
Samba reggae on the daily getting up in my dome
I'm eatin acaraje in Itacare With Iyamanje on the coast of Dende

Salvador da Bahia, Love ya first time I see ya
so play that Axé out the back of the Fiat
Jardim da Allah, Farol da Barra
I took the bus there stuck the fare in my bra
I’m a big brown burly girl
Not very girly girl
Not Roxy or Rip Curl or Hurly Girl
I’m the one who dove and found the black pearl,
I’m the one who chose to take back the world.

I’m a surf ninja warrior
Fast – fighting furious
Salt water jedi, red eyed and glorious
Write my own story until I’m notorious
Lead you through the mines of Moria, victorious

Keep on working hard girl you know its gonna pay
You gonna get your spot in the line someday
Paddle hard, live large, battle for every wave.
Cuz Girl this world is yours and its time to play

Keep on working hard girl,
Your gonna get your spot in the line some day
Paddle hard, live large,
This world is yours, yeah

Keep on working hard girl you know its gonna pay
You gonna get your spot in the line someday
Your beat is gonna pop when its time to play
Cuz Girl this world is yours , now its bombs away
